Search Engine Marketing

SEM or Search Engine Marketing is another form of internet marketing and it is all about to put your website in top 10 or 20 search engine results on the internet. It doesn’t cost you very much per costumer and can give you better result. Most popular search engines are Google, Yahoo! and MSN as these cover 90% of the total traffic. SEM is much faster growing mean of marketing as compared to traditional online marketing.

By the end of 90s search engine started to help people through internet by providing information on a click on the related issues. Then they introduced business models for the financial requirements of their services in 1996 by Open Text and Goto.com. In 2001 Goto.com had changed its name to Overture which had been acquired by Yahoo! later in 2003. While Google came in this field in 2000 with Google AdWords program to offer advertisements on the internet. These pay-per-click programs had become the primary money-makers by 2007.

In 2001 Danny Sullivan proposed the term “Search Engine Marketing” which included SEO activities, management of paid listings at search engines, site submission to directories and formulating the strategies of online marketing for organizations or individuals. According to the studies by WebWatch, Paid advertising on search engines and the method of presenting the advertisements on search result pages has been controversial. In 2002 Federal Trade Commission (FTC) was also concerned about the matter of revealing the paid advertising on search engines.

Violation of Trademark is another important issue that has been pretty controversial in terms of SEM. And the question is that is it ethical to bid on the competitors’ or business rivals’ brand names by any other organization or company. But Google adapted a policy to allow third party to do the same as they provide information on the trademark term. But the debate is still on regarding this issue. Overall, SEM is a very good and easy process of online marketing for the costumers as well as the company perspective also.
